Free WiFi at Munich International Airport

FMG, the Munich Airport operating company, has launched a new service: Effective immediately, passengers and airport visitors can surf the internet using the airport's WLAN for up to 30 minutes with no fees. Users of notebook computers and WLAN-enabled handheld devices, from tablets to mobile phones, are now just a few clicks away from reading e-mails and checking their favorite websites in the waiting areas of both terminals as well as the Munich Airport Center.

The new free service is based on the existing Deutsche Telekom HotSpot service at the airport. Here's how it works: Users who wants to go online with their own devices simply launch a browser. A start-up page will then open with a link to the registration page, where the user can enter the access code. This code is then sent as a text message to the user's mobile telephone. As soon as the code is entered in the HotSpot portal, the user will have full internet access.

The free service can be accessed by a given user once a day and terminates after 30 minutes. When the free 30-minute period ends, a single click opens the regular HotSpot portal, where additional time can be purchased by credit card. The price for each additional hour of online time is €4.95.

How smartphones are changing air travel

According to SITA/Air Transport World's 2011 Passenger Self-Service Survey, airline passenger use of smartphones has doubled in the past year, making it now 54%. Not only that, but 74% of business and first class passengers had a smartphone on them at the time of data collection. The survey questioned 2,457 air passengers from 70 countries and 73 airlines.

In an article from The Press, they state that the CEO of SITA, Francesco Violante, is calling this type of smartphone enthusiastic traveler the "mobile-centric passenger". These fliers expect "personal and timely communication from airlines, airports and other providers of travel-related services."

The data collected by the survey shows that passengers aren't just using their smartphone for work and personal reasons, but also for travel. For example, 31% of passengers have used a smartphone to check-in for their flight and 17% had used mobile boarding passes. While this percentage may not seem huge, it is most likely because not all airports and airlines are using technology to its fullest capability yet. In fact, 73% of survey respondents said they would like to use mobile boarding passes.

Airports aren't ignoring this data, as plans for 2014 show, including 97% of airports planning to offer web check-in, 89% planning to offer mobile check-in, 87% planning to offer bar-coded boarding passes for mobiles, and 63% planning to allow fliers to print luggage tags at kiosks.

While technology isn't going to change air travel overnight, it is certainly on its way to altering the way people travel and fly. Only time will tell what else technology has in store for the future of travel.

Musical Leipzig

From Johann Sebastian Bach to Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and a veritable orchestra of maestros who have been born, or have lived or died in Leipzig through the centuries, this small but stately city in Germany’s north-west Saxony is rightfully anchored at the epicenter of Europe’s rich cultural history.

Leipzig commemorates and celebrates its musical heritage with passion. The city will mark the 800th anniversary of the world-famous St. Thomas Boys Choir, Church and School in 2012 and the 200th birthday of Richard Wagner in 2013, making the next two years a fascinating time to visit.

In 2012, the city will also unveil the new Leipzig Music Trail, a three-mile walking route connecting the city’s most significant historical sites with distinctive stainless steel ground markers identifying each attraction.

The recently opened Bach-Museum on St. Thomas Square is a highlight of the new trail, exhibiting a treasure trove of hand-penned scores, original manuscripts, precious instruments and priceless memorabilia from the life and works of Bach. Tip: The touch screen interactive display in the Research Laboratory adds a contemporary edge to the classical music artifacts.

Bach was cantor of the neighboring St. Thomas Church for 27 years and is buried under the main altar. Note: The St. Thomas Boys Choir performs occasional concerts in the church, but you can also hear them sing on Fridays at 6 p.m., Saturdays at 3 p.m. and at Sunday services.

Another must-see in the city is Mendelssohn House, the only remaining private home of the great composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, which has been painstakingly restored to what it looked like when he lived there in 1845.

The acclaimed Gewandhaus Concert Hall and Leipzig Opera vie for attention on either side of central Augustusplatz, while the Schumann House on Inselstrasse is one of the city’s architectural gems.

If you start confusing Beethoven with Bach and Mozart with Mendelssohn, take a break from the music scene with a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts on Katherinenstrasse. Children will love Leipzig Zoo (www.zoo-leipzig.de) which recently opened Gondwanaland, Europe’s largest tropical hall.

The most stylish shopping arcade in Leipzig is Maedler-Passage where you’ll find upscale designer stores such as Aigner, Mont Blanc and Wempe.

The historical Auerbachs Keller in the same arcade is worth dining at just to see the dramatic cellar decorated with scenes of Faust by Goethe, who was a regular at the tavern when he was a student in Leipzig from 1765 to 1768. End your evening with a drink in one of the city’s lively pub alleys, Kleine Fleischergasse or Barfussgasse, which are short walks away.

For a more sophisticated evening, Falco Bar, Lounge and Restaurant at The Westin Leipzig Hotel on Gerberstrasse is positioned on the 27th floor, hundreds of feet above the city, with panoramic views of the skyline. The bar serves an array of aged whiskeys, digestifs and cocktails, and the sleek restaurant has two Michelin stars to its name.

Tip: Stadtpfeiffer in the Gewandhaus is another highly recommended restaurant with one Michelin star and a great place to dine before a concert. For a slice of history with fine food, reserve a table at Niemanns Tresor, set in a former private bank near St. Thomas Church.

One of the best late-night bars in Leipzig is Chocolate, on Gottschedstrasse. It’s also a popular restaurant but really comes alive after 10 p.m. when the city’s party crowd hits the bar and disco. Note: The bar specializes in coffee, cocoa and chocolate drinks, hence the name, but be warned, it’s also a smoker’s bar.

Hotel Fuerstenhof

Built in 1770 as a private residence for Karl Eberhard Lohr, a respectable banker and city councilor, this elegant mansion is now one of the best luxury hotels in Leipzig.

On Troendlinring, a five-minute walk from the city’s historical center, Hotel Fuerstenhof bears all the hallmarks of its patrician heritage while delivering a contemporary and stylish guest experience.

The entrance lobby has a country-house feel with sink-into sofas and armchairs, fresh flowers and a whisper-quiet ambiance, along with a polite and efficient check-in staff to whisk you through the formalities and up to your room.

Note: There are no irons/boards in the rooms and the TVs are outdated, but General Manager Jorg Muller (joerg.mueller@luxurycollection.com; 011-49-341-140-4608) says new flat-screen TVs are being installed in all 92 guest rooms this summer.

The Fuerstenhof’s six larger and more luxurious Executive Suites (Nos. 102-104 and 202-204) are the most requested premium accommodations, and all the suites (on floors 1-4 with room numbers ending 02-04) overlook the hotel square and have the best views of the historical center.

The Wintergarden bar, with its Tiffany-inspired glass ceiling, makes for a cozy pre-dinner cocktail before dinner in Restaurant Villers where up-and-coming Head Chef Till Weiss is a contender for his first Michelin star with interesting dishes like sturgeon rillette with fennel honey and lobster confit with champagne risotto.

For a more casual bistro-style meal, opt for Vinothek 1770 with its 140 wine selections.

FIFA Women's World Cup Germany 2011™

As of today, the U.S. Woman's Soccer Team have qualified for the finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011™ against Japan! While we keep our fingers crossed for Abby Wambach and her team to win the cup on July 17th in Frankfurt, it is time to take a look at some of the cities they've played in throughout this tournament.

Berlin, Wolfsburg, Dresden - Welcome Visitors After the Games

Berlin is the city where the opening game was held on June 26th, and Germany’s capital. It boasts trendy hangouts, non-stop entertainment, world-class shopping and is a must visit when it comes to history, cultural sites and architecture. The famous Kurfuerstendamm shopping mile invites visitors to join the celebrations of its 125th anniversary through October 2011.

The young town of Wolfsburg, set between the Harz mountains and the Lueneburg Heath region, has been shaped by the automotive industry as it is the home of Volkswagen. Each year two million visitors are attracted to the world’s biggest automotive factory, exhibition center, and theme park "Autostadt". The U.S. Women's Soccer Team beat Sweden here in the game on July 6th.

Dresden is a gemstone among the host cities and famous for its Church of Our Lady, the Green Vault, and the Zwinger palace with the Old Masters Picture Gallery and the world’s largest porcelain collection. But, Dresden is a hot tip for party animals, too, with more than 150 bars, clubs, trendy venues and a dynamic party scene. The U.S. team played here against Korea DPR and Brazil.

Question of the month: Cell Phone & Money in Germany

Today we received the following question from a loyal client and we thought we publish this, as many clients do have questions about these topics:

I can't believe it's one month away...I am preparing now so I have a few Qs.

In the past, my parents had a rented cell phone sent to them prior to their departure and activated with their current number. I read that cell phones can be rented at major airports and prepaid. What have people done? I'd like a phone for emergencies and for use in Germany to contact family and friends for planning purposes, not chitchatting. Can you recommend something?

Last time we went two years ago we had trouble using a Visa card or getting cash from ATMs. I found most places in smaller cities didn't take US cards and most preferred cash or only took cash ie-Gasthauser. Are traveler's checks still used? Should we purchase Euros before we leave? Pleases advise.

Our Answer:

My recommendation in regards of the cell phone rental is getting one upon touchdown. Either a sim card or a phone including sim card. Both options are available for prepay, so there are no contracts or anything binding involved. Obviously they would get a phone number for Germany. They can pick up one of those packages at any phone provider’s store and they can conveniently recharged (money) at any gas station. T-Mobile, Vodafone and O2 are the main player in Germany.

If you need a data-plan while travelling in Germany you have the choice of an internet stick for your laptop, which will cost you about € 60 plus a daily usage fee of approximately €4 on the days you are using the internet. The data-plan for your phone can also be added. Simyo offers no contract plans for as low as €10 per month, which allows to surf the web on your smart phone. You will need to pre-order the sim card and pay before arrival in Germany. Both alternatives do not have any binding contracts, so you only pay as you go.

Traveler’s checks are not a very common way to get money any longer, although banks and the postal offices still exchange them for cash, you will find it hard to use them in stores or restaurants. The most common way to get cash over there is using your debit card with your pin. Any ATM will take your card and allow withdraws of up to € 300 daily. There is a nominal fee from your US Bank, but it’s somewhere between $2 and $5 for each withdrawal, which is by far less expensive than using your credit card for cash withdrawal. Your credit card will be excepted in major restaurants, gas stations and some larger department stores, but you are right, Germany prefers CASH.

German brew: Where to start? German beer to the rest of the world is synonymous with Lowenbrau, Becks and Holsten Pils, but it houses more than half of Europe’s breweries inside its borders; there are 64 types and sub-types of German beer. To complicate things further, Germans are discerning when it comes to beer styles and can be wedded loyally to their local brew. When they order a beer, they hardly ever ask for a brand name. Instead they order beer by its style name, asking, for instance, for a Pils, an Alt (Old), a Kölsch, a Weissbier, a Helles or a Dunkel. Generally, beers become maltier going from north to south and “hoppier” from south to north. In addition, some styles can have more than one regional name. A Kellerbier, for instance, may also be called Zwickelbier, Kräusenbier or Zoigl. The north German Dortmunder, which is a pale lager containing 5 percent alcohol, is also known as Export.

Given regional loyalties, it’s probably best to talk about beers that you are likely to find at a regional airport!

Brews to look out for in Bavaria

Weissbier: This white beer is the most popular beer style in Bavaria. It’s a pale lager made from malted wheat. It’s varieties include Märzen, a medium body, malty lager that comes in pale, amber and dark varieties, or Dunkel, the dark sweetish, malty Munich style lager. When in Munich Airport, visit the “Airbrau,” they actually brew their own beer on site! If passing through Munch during winter, it’s traditional to drink Bock beer. Originally, dark lager beers, Bockbiers are among the heaviest and maltiest, yet smoothest, brews in the world. Sub styles include Maibock, Helles Bock, Doppelbock and the strongest, Eisenbock, which is frozen to remove excess water. These brews should be sipped, not guzzled because, traditionally, a Bockbier has a minimum alcohol content of about 6.5 percent. Most "standard" Bocks do not exceed an alcohol level of 8 percent, but some can weigh in at a staggering 13 percent.

Brews to look out for further north

Kölsch: One of only a handful of traditional German ales, this is the local brew of the city of Cologne. It is one of the palest German beers made and may only be brewed in the immediate area of Cologne.

Altbier: A copper-colored brew that’s indigenous to the Rheinland in the northwestern part of Germany. The best known Altbiers come from Düsseldorf, the state capital, and are most likely to be available at the airport.

Dortmunder: A full-bodied, moderately hopped beer of at least 5 percent alcohol content.

Berliner Weisse: A sour, tart, fruity, highly effervescent, spritzy, and refreshing ale that’s almost only ever found in and around Berlin. A drink for hot summer days, this beer is relatively low in alcohol, only 2.5—2.7 percent by volume, and because it’s a sour beer, it’s often taken with a shot of wood-ruff or raspberry syrup.

Pils: The home of this famous brew is Hamburg. Pils is a very blond, brilliantly clear, moderately effervescent lager, modeled largely after a beer style invented in 1842 in the Czech city of Pilsen from which it takes its name. Pils is often strongly hopped with an assertive up-front bitterness and has an alcohol content of about 5 percent. It’s sold everywhere in Germany and has about 60 percent of the German market.

For those wondering why Frankfurt has been left out of the German beer guide, the reason is that it’s in the state of Hesse where Apfelwein, which means cider, is the state beverage.

Thirst quencher: If you’re dazed, confused or at a loss with what to ask for, play it safe and say “Eine Pils bitte” – I’ll have a Pils please!

Air Costs: Get Ready for a New All-Time High
Air fares took a hike in 2010 - a 7% hike, according to the latest Business Travel Monitor from American Express Business Travel. That left fares just 6% shy of all-time highs in 2008. Continuing fare increases in early 2011 suggest it won’t be long before companies are paying a new all-time high in air fares. “With oil prices rising, airlines are looking to cut their capacity growth plans to combat higher fuel costs,” said Christa Manning, director of research for Global Advisory Services, the research arm of American Express. “Increases in airfares are likely to remain on an upward trend in 2011. So far this year, we are seeing this trend hold true with domestic airfare rates in January up 8% compared to January, 2010.”

Unused Tickets Not Always Money Lost
Unused air tickets don’t have to mean money lost. There are fees associated with changing itineraries and traveler names, but it’s usually cheaper to pay the fee and change a ticket than to discard an unused ticket and buy a new one — if you can keep track of all those unused and partially unused tickets. Carlson Wagonlit Travel said it saved clients more than $850 million on unused travel documents in 2010. The company’s Document Bank recycled 98% of eligible unused travel documents in North America by applying credits against new travel. The system can track and integrate travel documents that are not managed through the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) in the U.S. or the Bank Settlement Plan (BSP) in Canada, as well as documents that are settled through those standard channels. Other travel management companies offer similar programs.

Amadeus Signs Global Deal With conTgo
Amadeus has become a global reseller of all conTgo mobile solutions. The global transaction processor is integrating conTgo products into its entire corporate product portfolio and pushing them out to current and new customers. For travel managers that use Amadeus, that means the company’s Mobile Travel Assistant becomes immediately available to book and manage corporate travel and corporate travelers. Relevant information available on traveler’s smart phones includes ground transportation and hotel details as well as any location-specific information selected by the traveler’s employer or TMC. The product also provides location-specific and traveler-specific warnings and risk information and lets travel managers communicate directly with at-risk travelers via a map interface based on itinerary filtering and geo-spatial selection. Until this announcement, American Express was the largest TMC to have integrated conTgo into its client offerings.

Rising Oil Prices Not a Big Deal in the Short Term
You can stop worrying about the impact of rising oil prices on business travel. A short-term spike, even as high as $200 per barrel, would only cut about 2.5% off total business travel spending between 2011 and 2013. The numbers are contained in What Does Triple Digit Oil Mean for Business Travel? which was released by the Global Business Travel Association Foundation earlier this month. The report looked at scenarios with oil above $125, $150 and $200 per barrel through 2011, with a return to baseline by 2013. The conclusion: business travel spending and the number of trips taken will continue to grow even with the spike in oil prices, but projected growth will be reduced. Oil at $125 per barrell would cut projected travel spending growth by $5.8 billion, or 1.5%, and 700,000 trips over the next two years. Oil at $150 per barrell would cut projected travel spending by $6.9 billion, or 1.8%, and 1.8 million trips. Oil at $200 per barrell would cut projected spending growth by $9 billion, 2.5%, and 2.7 million trips.

Disagreement Over Free Checked Air Luggage
The Global Business Travel Association turned thumbs down on a suggestion from the U.S. Travel Association that airlines be required to allow one checked bag in all base fares. USTA said a free checked bag would reduce the burden on TSA by decreasing the number of carry-on bags that need to be screened. That would reduce wait times at security checkpoints. GBTA said in a statement that it does “not support the suggestion that the Department of Transportation require airlines to allow one checked bag as part of the base airfare. Airlines should be able to price their products as the market will bear.” GBTA did agree with USTA’s overall call for updating aviation security, including the creation of a Trusted Traveler program. “Business travelers are looking for a system that can help ensure safety while minimizing long lines and inefficient one size fits all security techniques,” the statement said.

Large, Small Corporate Agencies Differ in Services, Prices
There are more differences between large corporate agencies and small corporate agencies than size alone. A new survey by the American Society of Travel Agents and The Beat found that larger agencies tend to charge lower transaction fees, while smaller agencies tend to charge less for special services and customized management functions. The Corporate Agency Report also found that 70% of agencies offer clients some sort of mobile booking solution. Some 25% of bookings are made online by travelers, but 16% of those traveler bookings later need some sort of agent assistance. Agencies most often use Concur for online bookings and Trams for management reports.

Moscow Continues as Hotel Price Leader
Companies that complain about hotel prices in New York or Tokyo don’t know how lucky they are. For the sixth year running, Moscow is the most expensive city in the world for business travelers. The 2010 average price of $415 per night is a 3% decline over 2009 according to U.K-based travel management company Hogg Robinson Group Plc. New York comes in second at $339, followed by Geneva ($325), Paris ($321), and Zurich ($328.) Tokyo is number 18 on the list of 75 most expensive hotel cities at $270, while the cheapest hotel stay is in Milton Keynes, about 50 miles northwest of London, at $112.

How Berlin Became the Coolest City on the Planet

"New York in the '80s." "London at the height of Britpop." "Paris in the '30s." Berlin now.

If you believe the hype, and you really should, Berlin is the coolest city on the planet.

You can see it in the Metropolis futurism of Potsdamer Platz, home away from home for the red-carpet glitterati of Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and company. You see it in Mitte, the hipper-than-thou quarter for the upscale bohemian, where local fashion kings Lala, Kaviar Gauche and Michalsky float their flagships and where, at the Javier Peres gallery, James Franco will unveil the first European exhibition of his art work. You see it in the packed Berlin clubs -- the Berghain, Watergate, Cookies or Tresor -- meccas for the international techno crowd. You even see it in the ghetto chic of Kreuzberg and Neukolln, where the strong immigrant population holds out against the forces of gentrification and where real Berliners go to party.

"When I set up my own label in 2006, I could have gone anywhere. I could have gone to London or Paris, but I consciously chose Berlin," says Michael Michalsky, the hottest of the rising troupe of Berlin fashion designers and the man Karl Lagerfeld already has crowned as his successor. "As a designer, I feel I'm a seismograph of society. And in Berlin, the future is being lived on the streets. This is where I find my inspiration."

Michalsky is a busy man. He recently presented his new fall/winter collection at Berlin's fashion week as part of an event that included the German premiere of Tron: Legacy. And he has just designed a new bar -- the Catwalk Bar in the Marriott on Potsdamer Platz -- where the barstools are named after supermodels and guests can sip vitamin cocktails while they look down on VIPs rushing to catch the next Berlin International Film Festival gala.

This sort of cross-pollination between film and fashion, of music, high art and club culture, has been one of the keys to Berlin's rise on the hipster meter. Young creatives from throughout Europe and around the world have swarmed into the city where the underground rubs against haute couture, Hollywood and the avant-garde hang at the same clubs, and you can rent a spacious loft for the price of a closet in London.

In fact, Berlin is cheap -- that's part of the appeal. Soaring real estate prices have driven the starving artists out of downtown Paris, London and New York. But Berlin, with no real industry to speak of, has only the artists to rely on. Here, coolness is an economic survival strategy. As Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit puts it, coining the city's unofficial motto, "Berlin is poor -- but sexy."

"Berlin has made culture its primary industry," Berlin festival boss Dieter Kosslick says. "Music, film, art, fashion -- that's been the driving force, the creative industries. It's an extremely culture-rich, extremely international city."
Caterer K.P. Kofler is more blunt: "Berlin is everything Germany is not: spontaneous, exciting, open and cosmopolitan."

For the duration of the film festival, Kofler has erected a pop-up restaurant, Pret a Diner, on the site of the old East German state mint.

"Try finding a place like this in Frankfurt or Munich," he says. "No one has eaten here before; it's completely virgin ground." He waves his arm around Pret a Diner. The mint's gray concrete has been left untouched. The tables, chairs and deco are secondhand, picked from flea markets around the city. "Berlin is still unfinished; that's what gives it its energy."

That energy -- the sense that Berlin, 20 years after German reunification, still isn't set in stone -- is the magnet that draws people in.

"Berlin's got an excellent mix of people, from the avant-garde filmmakers of the Berlin School to the Hollywood productions at Studio Babelsberg, from Til Schweiger to [new German production giant] UFA Cinema," says Wolfgang Braun, ex-head of Disney Germany and current boss of indie distributor Kinowelt. "At Kinowelt, we want to be the No. 1 indie in Germany, so Berlin is the place we've got to be."

Braun had no problem persuading Kinowelt parent StudioCanal to move the company's HQ to the German capital. Or to have the European premiere of its biggest film, the Johnny Depp-Angelina Jolie thriller The Tourist, on Potsdamer Platz. The crowds were huge, the media -- film critics aside -- ecstatic. The paparazzi were restrained and polite. In what other city but Berlin could Pitt stroll through unmolested, four kids in tow, as he did on the day of the Tourist gala?

But other cities have stars. Other cities have designers, chic labels and cool shops. What sets Berlin apart is its nightlife.

The story of Berlin's rise to the zenith of European club culture has been told before. During the early 1990s, East Berlin was an empty shell. After the fall of the Wall, the locals left, en masse, to the West, leaving row upon row of abandoned factories and concrete housing estates. Then, from the West came students and DJs -- would-be artists and characters with names like Till "103 Club" Harter, Heinz "Cookies" Gindullis or Dimitri "Tresor" Hegemann -- who saw an opportunity and opened illegal underground clubs in warehouses, cellars and desolate storefronts.
"Back then there were no rules," Harter recalls. "You could just squat in a spot, set up a club and go."

Although he says he's not nostalgic, when Harter talks about Berlin during the early '90s, he can't suppress a wry smile.

"There was no Internet, no cell phones," he says. "There were barely any land lines in East Berlin back then; everything was word-of-mouth. Everyone in the scene knew everyone else."

Berlin's club culture was DIY and spontaneous. Clubs would pop up, become the "in" place and disappear during the course of a few months. Others, like Cookies, made a virtue out of transience, shifting from location to location and open only midweek for the hard-core clubbers.

"It was just at the moment when a generation was switching from rock 'n' roll to electronic music, to dance music," Harter says. "DJs came to Berlin because there were so many great spots to perform in. And because it was so cheap to live here, they stayed and made it their home. It was just the right place at the right time. It all came together in Berlin."

Two decades later, Harter is still here, and spots like his Bar Tausend in Mitte -- whereLeonardo DiCaprio and Ben Stiller hung out during the 2010 Berlin fest -- are still shaping the scene.

Harter worries that the hype around Berlin could ruin the vibe. "Hype is always dangerous," he says. But so far, this city hasn't lost its mojo. There's still no curfew in Berlin, and you can still open a bar "with an idea and a couple hundred Euros," Harter says. Twentysomething clubbers still hop budget flights to Schoenefeld Airport for a 72-hour pilgrimage to the techno temples of Berghain, the Watergate and Tresor. The illegal scene still thrives in the rougher Neukolln district, where they celebrate Sparkasse parties: taking over an ATM enclosure and clubbing till the cops come.

Berlin has cleaned up a bit during the past 20 years. You can dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant, hit Friedrichtstrasse for your pret-a-porter accessories or spoil yourself at Soho House's Cowshed Spa. But it's by keeping it street that Berlin has kept its edge.

"Berlin's underground culture, that's the appeal -- that's why the stars want to come here, and that's why people keep coming back," says Christoph Fisser, co-head of Studio Babelsberg, whose recent guests included Liam Neeson and January Jones in Unknown and Quentin Tarantino and the Inglourious Basterds crew.

"London might still have the class, if you're looking for that," he says. "But for the underground, Berlin still beats them all."

How does group airfare work?

Yesterday we received a group inquiry for airfare from Boston to Nuremberg, Germany. This is for a school group of 15 students going for a quick exchange and to see Germany! The group leader requested the best price and I started looking up fares and getting bits from airlines. This morning the group leader calls me back and gives me rates he has found through other agencies and by himself. What he didn't know, was that by doing this, he is bringing up the rate for his requested itinerary.

Here are some tips about group airfare requests and procedures as well as the pros and cons of group airfare verses published airfare:

When requesting group airfare, have alternative dates available
Do not request airfare with several different agencies, as this will increase you quote (see below)
Request group airfare with an agency which has a good connection and high sales volume with the desired airline

Group Airfare advantage:

Guaranteed price for all travelers
One Free seat (taxes need to be paid) for large groups (20+), depending on the airline
Low deposit required, final payment due generally 3 months before departure
Name changes are possible until ticketing (3 months before departure)
Group check in at the airport (most airlines)
Group seat assignment

Individual airfare advantage vs group airfare:

Individual ticket price generally lower than group price
More flexibility for departure and return flights as well as deviations

Here is the correspondence I had with a client about this:

Dear XXX:

We have great contacts to several airlines. However, I noticed that you or a different agency already inquired for the same dates with some of the airlines. The airlines do not ‘double quote’ airfare for several different agencies.

While I do understand that you like to get bits from different airlines, it is really just getting you higher quotes when having several agencies compete. The more group space is requested, the higher the fare will go, as the airline assumes that there is higher demand.

I am waiting to hear back from a different airline, but I assume that their rates might be around the same.

As mentioned on the phone and in my email, it will be less expensive to purchase contracted airfare. However, this would require full payment at time of booking, which you mentioned is a hardship for the group at this point.

The reason group airfare is generally more expensive is that airlines do not want to sell out their flights and loose the flexibility in terms of yield management. Once they sold out, they can’t change the price (and with that their profit) anymore. Plus they are going back to historical data and see how booked these particular flights were in the past. Group rates come in generally a bit higher, to ensure that the airline does not lose money on that flight, even though there might be a special on the market at the time of inquiry which is cheaper.

Hope this gives you a bit more understanding on how things are working.

Bottom line - if you are looking for the cheapest, most flexible airfare for your group, individual ticketing makes sense, especially as our contracted airfares are lower than the published airfare you will find online.

We get many questions from our clients regarding the ESTA, which is mandatory for many foreign travelers to the United States.

While it is advisable to visit the website of the Department of State for questions and answers, we wanted to let you know about one of the most asked question:

How long is my ESTA approval good for?

Your ESTA authorization is generally valid for two years*. This means that as long as you received an ESTA authorization to travel, you do not have to reapply for two years. You may update your travel information; however this information is optional and is not required. Note: Is it important to PRINT a copy of the document upon approval as it contains your ESTA number that may be needed for reference purposes.

Receiving ESTA authorization does not mean you may stay in the U.S. for two years. It only allows you to travel to the U.S. under the terms of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), which only allows you to stay in the U.S. for 90 days or less. If you plan to stay for longer than 90 days, you must obtain a visa at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

*If you obtain a new passport or change your name, gender or country of citizenship, you will be required to apply for a new travel authorization. This is also required if one of your answers to any of the VWP eligibility questions changes. Since September 8, 2010, the associated fee of $14 is being charged for each new application submitted.

The Pergamon Museum - Most visited in Berlin

The Pergamon Museum (Pergamonmuseum in German) takes its name from the Pergamon Altar which takes pride of place in the Museum’s main hall. Situated on Berlin’s famous Museum Island, the Pergamon Museum is the most visited Berlin museum.

The Pergamon Museum was designed by Alfred Messels, but he died before construction began in 1910. His close friend Ludwig Hoffmann supervised the construction of the Pergamon, to Messels’ design, and the building was completed in 1930.

Designed as a “Dreiflügelanlage”, a three-winged building, the Pergamon Museum today houses three separate museums: the Antikensammlung(Collection of Classical Antiquities), occupies the architectural halls and the sculpture wing, theVorderasiatisches Museum (The Middle East Museum) and the Museum für Islamische Kunst(Museum of Islamic Art). Apart from the priceless collections in each of these three museums, what has made the Pergamon Museum world-famous are its reconstruction of monumental archaeological building ensembles – such as thePergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the 6th century BC Ishtar Gate from Babylon including the Processional Way of Babylon, and the Facade of the Mshatta Palace.

There is a lot to see in the Pergamon and it’s not possible to cover it in one or two visits alone. The Pergamon Altar is of course the main attraction in the Museum. Dating back to the 2nd century BC, it was built on one of the terraces of the acropolis of the ancient city of Pergamon in Asia Minor.

Under a Masterplan for the Museum Island, the Pergamon Museum is being expanded to make it the centre of the museum complex and it will be connected to the Neues Museum, the Bodemuseum and the Alte Nationalgalerie.

The Pergamon Museum is open 7 days a week from 10:00 – 18:00 (up to 22:00 on Thursdays).

If you’re walking along Unter den Linden, the Pergamon Museum is easily reached on foot. Weather Chaos in Europe continues – U.K., France, Germany and the Netherlands are among the worst

“I’m really disappointed to have disrupted so many thousands of people’s Christmas plans,” he said on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme. “I couldn’t be more sorry, that’s the case.” Colin Matthews, chief executive of BAA, was forced into an embarrassing apology as he sought to sooth passengers’ fury.’

He added that it “may well be” that BAA had to buy more equipment to deal with conditions like those seen in recent days.

Philip Hammond, the U.K.Transport Secretary, promised an inquiry into how stranded passengers were treated at the airport over the weekend, as he acknowledged public “outrage” over the disruption.

Snow, ice and freezing cold weather was hitting road, rail and air networks across northern Europe for a third consecutive day Monday, leaving hundreds of thousands of travelers stranded, retailers facing lower sales and airlines and airports facing big bills for the disruption.

The U.K., France, Germany and the Netherlands are among the worst hit by the freezing weather, which is set to continue until Christmas, according to forecasters.

Paris was one of the worst hit cities. Airport operator Aeroports de Paris (ADP.FR) said no flights landed in Paris Monday morning due to falling snow. Conditions improved in the afternoon although delays were likely to persist.

The city’s public transport operator RATP said about 40 out of 50 bus lines were suspended.

Train operator SNCF said national lines were functioning, but there were delays because of speed restrictions due to the snow. Some local lines, particularly in Normandy, were shut down, it said.

Eurocontrol, the umbrella organization for air-traffic control across 38 countries, said Paris Orly, Roissy Charles de Gaulle and Le Bourget had no flights Monday morning, while Frankfurt and Berlin Tegel in Germany suffered heavy delays.

Fraport AG (FRA.XE), the operator of Frankfurt airport, said about 300 flights were expected to be canceled out of the 1,300 flights scheduled Monday. About 900 of 2,700 scheduled flights were canceled Saturday and Sunday. Fraport had set up some 1,000 camp beds at the airport over the weekend so passengers could spend the night, and staff distributed snacks and drinks and employed clowns and entertainers to try and keep children occupied.

German railway operator Deutsche Bahn AG said its trains were running, though some had major delays due to the bad weather and speed limits. A spokesman said trains were extremely crowded, and passengers could get refunds for their tickets if they decided not to travel.

Many travellers, unable to take flights, have tried to continue their journeys by rail, and main routes between Hamburg and Munich, Berlin and the Ruhr area and between Cologne and Munich were particularly busy, the spokesman said.

London’s Heathrow, the world’s busiest international airport, was open Monday but airport operator BAA Ltd. said it would be operating a reduced schedule until 0600 GMT Wednesday and that further delays and cancellations were inevitable.

British Airways PLC (BAY.LN), which canceled hundreds of flights over the weekend, said only one of Heathrow’s two runways was operational as BAA continued to clear snow and ice.

“Based on current icy conditions and forecast of further bad weather, we expect this process to take some time. The airport is, therefore, likely to be operating at significantly reduced capacity for several days,” BA said.

The airline said it planned to operate as many long-haul flights as possible, but there would be some cancellations. It operated a small number of short-haul flights Monday morning, but canceled the remainder after midday.

“Customers who are travelling from Heathrow, whose travel is not essential, are encouraged to cancel their flight, in return for a full refund, or to consider changing their flight to another date over the next 12 months,” BA said.

All airlines were advising passengers to check their flights were still scheduled before setting off for the airport.

On its website, Eurocontrol described the situation at Heathrow as chaotic and air-traffic control authorities had been requested to work out a solution, including regulating the number of flights into the airport to 10 an hour.

Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond said the immediate focus was on maximizing the number of flights and that restrictions on night flights would be relaxed. However, he added: “Heathrow is likely to be operating at reduced capacity until Christmas.”

As bad weather disrupted travel for the second consecutive winter, Hammond said it was time to consider whether the U.K. was seeing a “step change” in weather that required adjustment. The government would be looking at whether it made sense to spend more on winter preparedness, he said.

Heathrow was at a standstill for much of the weekend as it struggled to clear snow and ice. Thousands of flights were canceled and passengers were left huddled under blankets in terminals. With more snow falling, the airport operator Monday closed Terminal One and Terminal Three buildings for new passengers until due to congestion.

London Stansted, also owned by BAA, said it was fully operational and was taking a couple of flights that would normally have landed at Heathrow. Some airlines operating from Stansted, including Ryanair Holdings PLC (RYA.DB), had laid on extra flights to help stranded passengers, a spokeswoman for the airport said.

Ryanair said it had laid on 20 extra flights Monday between Stansted and destinations including Dublin, Bremen in Germany and Salzburg in Austria.

The disruption was hitting the workings of government. A meeting between the U.K. government and banks to discuss bonuses and lending was postponed Monday because Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne was having trouble catching a flight back to London from New York due to bad weather, a government spokesman said.

Rail services and the road network also were suffering severe disruption. The U.K.’s Met Office had severe weather warnings in place over much of the country for more snow or icy roads.

Eurostar, which operates passenger trains between London and European cities including Paris and Brussels through the Channel Tunnel, said it was suffering delays and speed restrictions and it has a number of trains and crew out of position. It said it would operate a contingency timetable with some cancellations for a number of days and it wasn’t selling any more tickets for trains up to Christmas.

In the Netherlands, Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport was fully operational Monday, after canceling about 100 flights on Saturday and about 70 on Sunday due to the harsh weather conditions. However, a spokesperson said some flights were still likely to be canceled due to continuing problems in other countries, while the weather conditions in Amsterdam were causing delays to other flights.

Air France-KLM (AF.FR) said it expected only a “limited” number of cancellations on European flights leaving Schiphol, while almost all long-haul flights will take off.

During the weekend, up to 1,000 passengers got stranded at Schiphol. Passengers who couldn’t get a hotel from their airline were given camp beds by Schiphol, but the airport said only “dozens” had been used.

t must be a thankless task, operating the Twitter account for a major airport during a snowstorm – as the person behind @heathrowairport is discovering.

As thousands of increasingly irate passengers struggle to find information on flights and cancellations, they are often turning to the Heathrow Airport Twitter feed.

Unfortunately, it seems that the person behind the account has little more to go on than the frustrated passengers themselves, and is reduced to simply telling people to check with their airlines or visit heathrow.com.

“Best advice is to check with your airline before you fly or view our online departures at heathrow.com”, they tell @jsn0. “Live flight information at Heathrow is available at heathrow.com or via your airline”, @rizzelrose is informed. “You can check our live flight schedules at heathrow.com or contact your airline at qantas.com”, hears Australia-bound @davery1979.

This less-than-innovative approach to using social media is not meeting with universal approval. One Twitterer points out that “the British Airways website isn’t working so I can’t check”, while @keith1906’s airline has told him to check with the airport, who are now telling him to check with the airline, in a circle that looks tough to break.

Black forest gourmet heaven

Christmas baked apples:

Ingredients: 4 large, tart apples 10g (1 tbsp) butter 4 tsps raisins Flaked almonds Honey-water mixture To prepare: Wash the apples, then remove the stalk, the core and the pips with an apple corer. Make a horizontal cut around each apple so it won't burst. Place in a greased shallow ovenproof dish then fill with raisins and flaked almonds. Sprinkle with cinnamon and pour honey-water mixture into the top. Bake on a low shelf at 200°C for approx. 30 mins. Leave the apples to cool, then serve.

Glühwein - mulled wine:

Ingredients: 1 litre dry red wine 1 unwaxed lemon 2 cinnamon sticks 3 cloves 3 tbsp sugar Cardamom to taste To prepare: Heat the red wine. Slice the lemon and add to the hot red wine together with the cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and sugar. Heat for approx. 5 mins. then remove from the heat. Cover and allow to infuse for 1 hour. Reheat and pass through a sieve before serving.

Gingerbred men:

Bake our gingerbread men at home using this easy traditional recipe. Melt together 50g clarified butter, 300g honey and 100g sugar - do not boil, allow to cool slightly. Work 300g flour, 2 eggs, salt, 150g ground almonds, 15g mixed spice and the honey mixture into a dough - cover and allow to stand at room temperature for at least 48 hours. 1/2 tsp. bicarbonate of soda, 1/2 tsp. baker's ammonia - mix each with 1 tbsp. of water and work into the dough. Roll out the mixture, cut the shapes out and decorate. Bake for 10-15 mins. at 180 degrees C and allow to cool.

Spritz cookies:

Ingredients: 200g butter 200g sugar 3 eggs 500g flour 1 packet vanilla sugar To prepare: Beat the butter until foamy, then add the eggs and the sugar mixed with the vanilla sugar. Stir everything together well. Stir in the flour. Using an icing bag, pipe different shapes onto a baking sheet covered with baking paper. Bake for around 10-12 minutes at 175°C.

Marzipan Potatoes:

Ingredients: 200g marzipan 100g icing sugar 2cl brown rum 30g cocoa powder To prepare: Knead together the marzipan, icing sugar and rum well, then make into a roll. Cut off equal-size pieces and shape into oval balls. Using a skewer, make irregular indentations in the "potatoes" to resemble the "eyes". Then dust the marzipan potatoes with the cocoa powder until well coated.

Dresdner Christstollen:

Ingredients: 750g flour, 275g butter, 90g sugar, 75g yeast, 185g tepid milk, 500g raisins, 75g chopped sweet almonds, 20g chopped bitter almonds, 70g candied lemon peel, 15g candied orange peel, grated peel of 1/2 lemon, 1 pinch of salt, 1/2 vanilla pod, 1 pinch of ground cinnamon, 1 pinch of ground cardamom, 1 pinch of ground mace. Preparation: Sift some of the flour onto the work surface and make a well in the centre. Break up the yeast, add a little of the milk and sugar and mix to a loose dough. Dust with flour and leave to rest for approx. 15 mins. Next work to a firm dough adding the rest of the flour and milk and the butter cut into pieces. Leave the dough to rest in a warm place for approx. 20 mins. in a bowl covered with a tea towel. Mix the other ingredients well and knead them into the "stollen" mixture. Allow to rest for another 20 mins. then shape into a "stollen" and make two grooves lengthways. Place on a greased baking tray and bake in a preheated oven at 160 degrees C for between 35 and 50 mins. Once cooled, spread generously with melted butter. Leave for 2-3 weeks and then dust with icing sugar before serving.

Pharisäer:

Ingredients: coffee, a swig of rum, whipping cream (100g) and a teaspoon of sugar Make a strong black coffee in a tall glass and add the rum. While the coffee is brewing, mix the sugar with the cream and whip until stiff. Use this to crown your drink and then sit back and enjoy.

Travellers visiting south-west Germany over the coming weeks can enjoy the growing sense of excitement and festive cheer as seasonal markets open throughout the region.

The tourism agency representing Baden-Wurttemberg highlighted a range of festive events that will be getting underway soon, which range from the 'big and bustling' to the 'small and intimate'.

In Bad Wimpfen, visitors can explore one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets and join walking tours led by night watchmen and town guides in period costume.

Another destination worth visiting is Ludwigsburg, near Stuttgart, which hosts a Baroque fair featuring more than 170 stalls, while Gengenbach offers the impressive sight of a giant advent calendar that uses the 24 windows of the 18th-century town hall.

A Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle

Schloss Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular castles in Europe and we are glad that our autumn visit has allowed us to tour the interior of the castle.

On a previous trip in winter, we could only admire the Neuschwanstein Castle from the village inHohenschwangau. On that occasion our tour did not include a castle visit. Our tour director wasn’t forthcoming with information on how to get up to the castle and we didn’t have a lot of time to explore on our own.

Visits to the rooms of Neuschwanstein Castlecan only be done as part of a guided tour. Tours are conducted in German and English by Schloss Neuschwanstein guides and for visitors who do not speak these two languages, audio-guides are available in various languages.

The castle tour takes half an hour and visitors are shown through the rooms on the third and fourth floors. King Ludwig commenced building his castle in 1869, but it was never completed.

King Ludwig’s Fairytale Castle

After King Ludwig II was defeated by the Prussians and was forced to accept domination of his country by Prussia, he decided to retreat to an alternative world of fantasy. Ludwig II had a very romantic view of life in the Middle Ages and thought he could live like a king of the Middle Ages and so the castle that he wanted to build was to be “in the authentic style of the old German knights’ castles”.

Ludwig was also very much influenced by the works of Richard Wagner and the main rooms of Neuschwanstein Castle are decorated with murals of scenes from the Germanic and Nordic sagas on which Wagner had based his works.

On the tour of the castle rooms visitors get to see Ludwig’s monuments to the medieval German knights’ and legends as well as references toTannhäuser, Parzival and Lohengrin, all of whom the king had identified with since he was young. Particularly impressive were the King’sbedroom, the Throne Hall, the Festival Hall and the Singers’ Hall. The Singers’ Hall was one of Ludwig’s favourite projects and is the most important room in the Castle. (Note: Image to the right is from a print.)

The guide we had was excellent and our only disappointment was that photography is not allowed in the castle. Also, you do have to move quite quickly through the rooms as with the many visitors coming through, there’s no time to hang around and enjoy the features of this fairytale castle.

The tour ends on the 2nd floor where there is a shop, cafeteria and multimedia room.

Just past the cafeteria is a balcony from which you can get great views towardsHohenschwangau Castle, the village and the surrounding area. The kitchen on the ground floor can be viewed on your own before you exit the Castle.

If you are visiting Neuschwanstein Castle on your own, note that entrance tickets must be bought at the ticket office in Hohenschwangau villagebefore you come up to Castle. The ticket office will advise you of the possible entrance times. You will not be able to buy tickets at the Castle itself. In spite of the inclement weather during our visit, it was very busy so allow time for standing in the queue. During the summer months, the Castle receives about 6,000 visitors each day. Also, allow time for getting up to the castle and back to the village.

Although only a 30-minute tour, a visit to the Neuschwanstein Castle rooms is certainly worthwhile doing. A great view of the castle is from Marienbrücke.

5 Things you want to know about travelling in Germany

Restaurants and Bars – You do not get water for free, you have to pay for it. If you order water you will get carbonated water. In most restaurants you can request tap water and they may or may not charge you but it is most likely straight from the sink. In some American fast food restaurants, (i.e. McDonalds) you must pay for ketchup as well. Be aware that the menus at most fast food restaurants in Germany are not exactly the same. You may also notice that a sandwich that you recognize from back home may taste a little different or it could be smaller. When you enter a restaurant you will not be seated, just walk right in and pick the table of your choice!- the tip should be much smaller than you would give in the States (this is because the waiters/waitresses get paid more than in the states) A tip of two or three EUR would be considered a good tip for very good service.

Supermarkets – If you shop for groceries in Germany you will notice the supermarkets have all of their large rolling carts outside in a designated area and they are locked to one another. In order to utilize a cart you must place one EUR in the cart itself, you will see the slot on the handle. Upon leaving the supermarket you latch the cart back to the other carts and pull the device out where you placed the coin, now you can retrieve your coin. When you have all of the groceries you want, proceed to the check-out counter. You will have to purchase plastic bags to put the groceries in or you can take one in yourself. If you decide to purchase one they are usually visible at the counter and normally only cost a few cents. If there is a long line do not put all of your groceries in the bag, put them back into the cart and bag them away from the line.

Closing hours – On Sunday everything is closed except for some restaurants, bars, gas stations and shops at the main train station and bigger airports. Some bigger stores are realizing that they can make much more money if they open on Sunday so they are doing just that, but I would not rely on it. During the week shops in bigger cities close at 8 PM at the latest. You may see shops in smaller cities closing even earlier.

Public Phones – Public phones are very rare in Germany. If you find one you will notice that they only take telephone cards. You can buy a telephone card in different shops like “T-Punkt”, “Telekom”, “Post”, and “Vodafone” or you can go to an Internet cafe.

Miscellaneous – “Bad” in front of a towns name does not mean that the people or the city is bad for example, “Bad Homburg”. Bad in front of a towns name normally means that the town is designated as a healthy location normally with very clean air and water.

Why Does Airline Food Taste so Awful?

Is it actually the food the airlines serve (when they do) that tastes so bad, or is it the flying experience that makes the food taste so awful?

Wired Magazine reported that a handful of brave volunteers made “the ultimate sacrifice for science” and ate airline food. Voluntarily.

Apparently a lab was set up that perfectly simulated the intense dryness, stale air and ear-irritating low pressure of airline cabins.

Germany’s Lufthansa Airlines spearheaded the experiment basically because they wanted some scientific sense of just how air travel affects the taste buds. So the volunteers were jammed into an Airbus A310 fuselage to find out.

From there, the hapless tasters were subjected to motors under the seats recreating the full sense of engine vibrations, while the ”cabin” air pressure was lowered and humidity reduced to a parching 15 percent.

The “flyers” were served various meals, tasted the food and reported back that the “pressurized cabins dulled the senses,” causing food to taste as if it had 20 percent less sugar and salt than it actually did.

Lufthansa says it will correct the mistaste by adding more sugar, herbs and spices to liven up the flavor.

They say they’ll also add humidifiers and pay more attention to aroma.

It seems that the nose feasts before the palate so, according to Ingo Bulow, head of on board services at the airline, “If you serve hot brown water and fill the cabin with the aroma of coffee, people will perceive the drink as coffee.”

Of course they could just serve good coffee and let the natural aroma entice the passengers.

Now there’s a novel idea.

A New Face for Hamburg’s Harborfront

FROM the top of a bright orange, 42-foot-tall observation tower, it wasn’t much of a stretch to look down at the thousands of amateur runners, all wearing the same white T-shirt as they jogged a four-kilometer route through Hamburg, and imagine them as streams of worker ants, rushing through an enormous, half completed designer colony.

On a brisk Saturday last month, the runners snaked past construction cranes and over bridges and through crowds of strolling local families and tour groups. Some glanced up at the custom-made undulating glass windows of the half-finished Elbphilharmonie building towering above them, but others just ran by it.

The building is the cornerstone of HafenCity, a new district at the site of Hamburg’s central harbor on the Elbe River, which is one of the most ambitious urban construction sites in Europe. Though several portions of the district are still unfinished, HafenCity is filled on the weekends with tourists and residents eating at its waterside cafes, enjoying its vast open space and seeking a glimpse of its “starchitect”-designed buildings, 30 of which have been completed.

The spotlight so far has been on the Elbphilharmonie, a 350-million-euro (and counting) project, or more than $433 million, with a tentative completion date of 2013. Designed by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron to look like a glass wave cresting atop a brick warehouse, it is at the end of the Am Sandtorkai peninsula, and will eventually house the NDR Symphony Orchestra’s concert hall, a five-star hotel and about 60 luxury apartments.

There have been expensive mistakes and delays — all witnessed by visitors drawn as much by its architecture as by its expanding construction costs. But the project, which has exceeded its initial budget by more than 200 million euros and its initial completion date by two years, is slowly taking its eventual shape: a glass wave 12 stories on one side and 18 on the other. When it’s finally done, the Elbphilharmonie will be HafenCity’s architectural crown jewel.

HafenCity itself won’t be finished for another 10 to 15 years. But since 2000, when Hamburg came up with the now nine-billion-euro master plan to transform 388 acres of its vast central harbor into a brand new district, increasing the size of the city center by 40 percent, things have been moving at a steady clip.

Richard Sennett, professor of sociology at New York University and author of “The Conscience of the Eye: The Design and Social Life of Cities,” said of HafenCity recently: “The western part of the project is state of the art and really intelligent. The sustainability is not just window dressing. It’s for real. They thought big in a way that makes sense in the future. And they managed to accomplish it by a kind of collective will of the city.”

Already Sandtorkai, one of the 10 neighborhoods that will make up HafenCity, is complete; 50 percent of the area is either under construction or ready for it to start. Roughly 1,500 people are already living in HafenCity, and about 6,000 people are commuting to work there.

While the Elbphilharmonie is HafenCity’s architectural diva, there are plenty of other buildings to see. Richard Meier recently built the Hamburg-America-Center, a building with a curved glass facade within the Grasbrook quarter. The Erick van Egeraat-designed Waterfront Towers in the southern end of the Überseequartier feature dramatic facades that look as though they are made of jagged glass and natural stone puzzle pieces. (Next door will be HafenCity’s first hotel, the seafarer-themed 25 Hours, due to open next March.)

On the other side of HafenCity, in the Brooktorkai neighborhood, will be the architectural bookend to the Elbphilharmonie: the new headquarters of the Spiegel publishing group and a little sister building called the Ericus-Contor. Designed by the Danish architect Henning Larsen, the two U-shaped, gleaming glass buildings will be visible from Hamburg’s main train station.

Already finished is the Unilever headquarters and the neighboring Marco Polo Tower, both conceived by Behnisch Architekten, a German firm known for its environmentally friendly designs. Both projects are by the water on the southeast corner of the Strandkai neighborhood near the Cruise Center and the observation tower; the Unilever building looks like an airy seven-story glass cruise ship, and the Marco Polo building, which is home to some of HafenCity’s most exclusive multimillion-euro apartments, is like an abstract flower-shaped tower surrounded by petal-like balconies.

Martin Haas, a partner in Behnisch Architekten, who oversaw both buildings, said that in the end, what is truly important to the people who live and use the HafenCity is not the splashy designer architecture but instead, “the spaces in between the buildings.” He added: “And in the HafenCity you find a lot of quality public spaces. You can see how important the urban planners understood the importance of that by seeing how much money was spent on designing public spaces.”

One can experience the importance of HafenCity’s public spaces firsthand by strolling from the Magellan Terraces, to the Elbphilharmonie and along Am Kaiserkai to the Unilever building and the surrounding Marco Polo Terraces. The success of the Magellan Terraces, two plazas by the water’s edge designed by the Spanish architect Benedetta Tagliabue of EMBT Arquitectes, was clear just from the number of children skateboarding along its edges.

Along that same route one can also see the importance of destination-worthy little cafes and restaurants. Next door to the Elbphilharmonie, and always buzzing, is the cozy Carls, a bistro where you can get little bites, from homemade quiche to cakes, throughout the day. On a sunny day it’s almost impossible to find an outdoor table at the Kaiser Perle, an Art Deco style cafe built into a decorative brick wall along Am Kaiserkai. Not far away, families happily wait in line for cones at a Häagen-Dazs shop.

The best reason to walk across the length of HafenCity toward the train station is to have an excellent meal at the quirky and crooked Oberhafen Kantine, a relic of the harbor’s working past, in the middle of what feels like an industrial no man’s land.

Once a simple seafarer’s cafeteria, the kitchen has been taken over by one of Hamburg’s best chefs, Thorsten Gillert, who has retained many of the traditional dishes (like Labskaus, a hearty mix of corned beef, herring, potatoes and beets) but has taken the ingredients up several notches.

This little culinary gem is in the center of what is designated to be HafenCity’s creative center. Unlike the area’s other neighborhoods, where most real estate was sold for high profit margins to major corporations or developers, some of the old warehouses and industrial spaces here in the Oberhafen will be kept and leased to art-related associations and projects.

Across the Elbe and beyond the train tracks stands an old warehouse that once stored fruits and vegetables shipped in from other exotic ports. The building is now owned by Marc van den Broek, and it is a storage spot for artwork instead of bananas. Mr. van den Broek, an artist and entrepreneur who recently sold a building and moved from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is familiar with the value of industrial neighborhoods on the edge.

From his stylish office at the top of the building, Mr. van den Broek has been observing HafenCity as it grows. He, like many of the local residents, swings back and forth with his opinion about the project. On the more cynical side, he jokes that so far the site seems to benefit only the wealthy. “The only attraction in the HafenCity if you live there, is the tourists coming on buses to see where you live and to say, ‘That guy must have a lot of money if he can afford to live here.’ ”

On the other hand, Mr. van den Broek said that even if the Elbphilharmonie ended up costing a billion euros, most people would eventually end up not caring, even if much of it comes from public financing.

“The Parisians also thought that the Eiffel Tower would cost too much,” he said. “In 20 years, after the Elbphilharmonie is finally done, no one will consider it a waste of money anymore.”

Passport costs on the rise!

Charges for U.S. passports will increase on July 13. The cost of a new passport for an adult will jump from $100 to $135. Those under 16 will pay $105, up from $85.

Renewing a passport will cost $110, up from $75. Travelers will pay a new charge of $82 to add more pages to an existing passport if less than four pages remain blank. Formerly, this was a free service.

Passport cards, which can be used by Americans traveling by land or sea on trips to the Caribbean, Canada and Mexico, will cost $55 for adults, up from $45. For minors, passport cards will be $40, up from $35. All costs include a $25 execution fee.

Last week I was in for a treat! I was invited to tour the "Navigator of the Seas', one of Regent Seven Seas 3 cruise ships. Paper Arrival/Departure Forms for Visa Waiver Program Travelers to be Eliminated - The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced that following a successful seven-month pilot program conducted with the support of the Government of New Zealand on Air New Zealand flights from Auckland to Los Angeles International Airport, the use of paper I-94W forms will be eliminated for travelers from countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) with an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) arriving in the United States at all airports by the end of this summer. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will activate automated processing for U.S. airports on a rolling basis over the next several months.

The elimination of the paper I-94W form enables travelers to provide basic biographical, travel and eligibility information automatically through ESTA prior to departure for the United States. The CBP recommends that travelers submit ESTA applications as soon as an applicant begins making travel plans. ESTA applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel, and once approved, will be valid for two years or until the applicant's passport expires. As one of Europe’s leading carriers, this will strengthen Air Berlin’s presence in the US market by introducing the first nonstop service to Berlin from Miami, providing convenient reach to one of Europe’s most exciting and diverse cities. Air Berlin will continue to offer nonstop service to Düsseldorf from Miami three times weekly during its winter operation from November 1, 2010 through April, 2011.
